This spot really has the classic old school vibes. It's the quintessential San Francisco spot with lots of wood decor and servicing large platters of delicious seafood. There's similar spots in sf that are like this but the location is nice if you live closer to fidi. We sat at the bar- most of this place is countertop seating which is nice. You get served quickly! I went with the seafood sautéed plate which came with scallop, crab and shrimp in this creamy, a little sauce which was delicious! It also came with some rice and vegetables if the day, which was boiled cauliflower, broccoli, green beans and carrots.
We finally had the pleasure of visiting Tadich Grill earlier this month & it lived up to its name! We didn't have reservations and did a walk in but didn't have to wait too long, maybe about 30-45 mins. I think there was a convention going on when we came so there were a lot of big parties. The manager Alexis, took down our name and offered us the drink menu while we waited. I opted for an espresso martini which was fantastic! One of the best ones I've had in the bay. Not too much later we were seated & couldn't wait to order. We ordered the fried calamari with tarter & cocktail sauces, the infamous seafood cioppino with garlic bread, the petrale sole, wild Alaskan halibut steak in soy ginger broth and the Dungeness crab & prawns a la monza with rice en casserole. All of the seafood were extremely fresh. And the cioppino is one of the best we've had and that's saying quite a lot for San Francisco. My favorite of the nice was the Dungeness crab and prawns a la monza in rice. Though a little heavy and filling, I couldn't get over the chunks of crab and prawns with each bite of rice. From the manager to the bartender to the service staff, we were very impressed by how professional everyone was. The crew at Tadich Grill has the system figured out & there's good flow. We couldn't help but leave with happy & full bellies!
The service was fast and friendly. It's been a few years since I've been here. The food is dramatically more expensive than it was before, but it was still delicious. The bowl of cioppino was $58. If it had not been for a work lunch, I probably would not have ordered it. It did come with a lot of seafood, and it was very flavorful.
175th anniversary? If you're not impressed that .... It's an understatement to say that things have changed since my last visit about eight years ago. Coming in on a Tuesday a little after noon, there were three people standing inside by the door. The white jacketed gentleman behind the counter waved at me and asked how many diners. I held my index finger and he pointed me about halfway down the counter to a few open seats. After being offered bread and given a glass of ice water, I studied the menu after confirming the anniversary promo was still in effect. I started with a Bloody Mary (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=dJlPvvkD7H3yM_Mn5zrDwA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), the promo item offered at $1.75.... yes, a dollar and seventy-five cents. Being a workday, one would be my limit as it was a pretty stiff version. I enjoyed it and was happy to be able to walk a straight line back to my car after lunch. I started bowl of Coney Island chowder (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=KslQMlpf9x1avp_N5eZKBQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). It was a nice rendition which I spiced up with a few drops of Tabasco, chocked with plenty of chopped clams. The two diners influenced my main meal as they ate, promoting me to order the special for Tuesday, Braised Pot Roast (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=5rBWL7ivnIVl045iZl0MlA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). It came with a variety of fresh vegetables and mashed potatoes. Let's just say this was a Marty McFly meal as it brought me back to meals in the '60's and '70's. The meat was fork tender, cauliflower, green beans, carrots, and broccoli perfectly al dente. The mashed paired well with the old school pot roast gravy. I finished half while the other half, packed great for reheating (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=ZsgY3G6YEiHlhZzB_YGJ1A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), for dinner a couple nights later. Big thanks to Paul G. for making my lunch a smooth counter experience. I was in and out in less than an hour. Random observation, there are a lot of regulars here during lunch, especially locals who work in the area. The gentleman who sat next to me after a couple left was very familiar with the staff (asked about the family). You may get a feel from that TV sitcom "where everyone knows your name". I should stop in more often. After all, how long has it been here again?
Stopped in for dinner Monday night at the bar. Food was very good. I started with a crab cake for my appetizer. Then I had the filet Mignon. I believe they grill it over a wood fueled fire. It had a great flavor and perfect char cooked medium rare. My niece had the calamari steak. She said it was delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. I loved the atmosphere! It has a very charming old school San Francisco vibe. This is a true classic and treasure!
My father-in-law recently brought us here. He was visiting from the Netherlands and had last dined here 30 years ago. He says it hasn't changed a bit and everything was incredibly delicious. I had the crab and avocado which just beyond as well as the white clam chowder huge pieces of clam, lots of potatoes and celery, the beverages were great we had old fashions. My husband had the swordfish which was delicate and excellently cooked. Would totally return to this restaurant. I would like to mention the weight staff now because they are good at what they do you forget sometimes what exemplary service is and this place has it.
Brought my wife with me on a short business trip to SF and seafood is her favorite so figured the iconic Tadich Grill was a good bet. I actually wanted to try Anchor since their Cioppino looked good on Mark Wien's video, but they were closed. Anyhow, the classic SF decor didn't disappoint. We got there right at morning, 11am to beat the rush. Everyone was friendly, even our server, but he wasn't really helpful when we asked questions about items on the menu. Just gave short predictable answers with no elaboration and nothing insightful. Definitely seemed preoccupied and more tip and flip focused. In addition to the items pictured, we got clam chowder and Irish coffees. Clam chowder was just ok, it tasted like it had bell pepper in it, which obviously isn't a traditional ingredient and if you're going to the oldest seafood restaurant in the city... you expect the recipes to be classic. I've had much better elsewhere for my preferences. My wife loved her Branzino, so that made it all worth while to me. My sole was fine, it didn't blow me away, but nothing to complain about. I really liked the clam strips, that was the best thing I had, but of course, just an appetizer so not that substantial. Aside from the chowder, the crab leg cocktail was disappointing. The legs were not that big and were dry. I'm a dungeness snob, growing up in the Bay, I feel it's better than any other crab out there. But this just didn't have that distinct succulent dungeness flavor and the cocktail sauce had cumin in it which again, is not traditional and covered up what little crab flavor there was. So all in all, between our preoccupied server, disappointing crab cocktail, and odd chowder it was somewhat of a disappointment for me. I was willing to pay any price to get amazing seafood and Dungeness crab esp. But it was still nostalgic to go and my wife liked her entree, so for that, it was a success. It was a 3 star experience for me if I'm being honest. But considering the historic venue and my wife's dish, didn't feel right to give it 3. I'd still recommend it to others visiting SF, but I personally would try some other seafood places next time. It's been real Tadich Grill.
Still serving delicious food. Came here mucho years ago and it was such a great meal. Decades later and it's just as good. Seafood platter is a smattering of all these lovely things, and is very well priced Crab and lobster thermidor is decadent and deeply satisfying. The fried seafood mix was incredible. Very good, attentive and engaging service. A real pleasure dining here. Enjoy!
I have been here 3 times this week...and all times I was so hungry I devoured my food before taking a picture. So bad but so good. Crab Louis Salad Sand Dabs Liver and Onions Did not finish my review from my last visit and am in SFO again for only one night and I am back at Tadich again this time for Calamari Steak served with a butter sauce. I love this place because it's an old school diner that serves great seafood. All the wait staff are men and they wear these white jackets, shirt & tie with black slacks and long apron You can purchase their Sour Dough bread if they have enough for diners. Please let me go back to San Francisco just to eat here again.
